Isometric, a science-powered carbon registry, has introduced a new reforestation protocol designed to enhance the transparency and reliability of nature-based carbon removal. This comes in response to the increasing demand for accurate carbon credits from reforestation projects.

The protocol, which is currently under public consultation, has already garnered feedback from industry leaders such as Mombak, Pachama, Sylvera, and Renoster. It aims to revolutionise traditional carbon monitoring methods through several key innovations.
One of the major updates is the use of advanced technologies like Geographic Information System (GIS) data, LiDAR-enabled drones, and machine learning models. This modernised approach replaces manual tracking, significantly reducing the time it takes for carbon removal data to be verified and credited—from several months to just a few weeks.

The protocol also introduces digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) tools, which will automate data collection and analysis. This ensures faster credit issuance for suppliers and provides buyers with a higher level of confidence in the real-world impact of their carbon investments.
Another key innovation is the shift from static to dynamic baselines. Instead of relying on decade-old control parameters, this system uses multiple control plots, allowing for more frequent and accurate tracking of net carbon removal.
Additionally, Isometric’s protocol includes an improved life cycle assessment and a new method for calculating leakage, making the entire carbon removal process more region-specific and accurate. This comprehensive analysis accounts for emissions across all project stages, ensuring a more holistic view of carbon removal projects.
