The International Carbon Registry (ICR) has announced significant updates to its carbon standards, aiming to better align with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation’s (CORSIA) offset scheme and the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Accreditation (ICROA) requirements. These revisions follow a month-long public consultation initiated in late July.

The Iceland-based ICR has released updated documentation covering its programme requirements, processes, and procedures. The goal of these changes is to enhance clarity and consistency while aligning with ISO standards and international best practices.

Key updates include new tools and documents, expanded definitions, and improved risk management and safeguards. The changes also refine the processes for project registration, issuance, and validation. Additionally, ICR has updated its methodology development and verification procedures, ensuring that they are both robust and credible.
The revised standards incorporate the latest scientific advancements and are designed to provide stakeholders with clearer, more precise guidelines. ICR emphasised that these changes aim to support continuous improvement, offering detailed procedural steps to enhance overall project management.
The updated programme is now in effect, and all new projects must adhere to the revised guidelines. Projects currently undergoing validation have until 31 December to complete the process under the previous version of the standard.
