Formula E's green leader: Lucas Di Grassi drives towards a net-zero future

Lucas Di Grassi, a well-known figure in the world of motorsport, is driving more than just high-speed cars—he’s leading a charge towards sustainability. As a co-founder of the Zero Summit, a platform dedicated to promoting zero-carbon technologies, Di Grassi is deeply invested in the intersection of sports and environmental responsibility. His recent partnership with Rubicon Carbon, a firm specialising in carbon credits, is a significant step in his commitment to offsetting his carbon emissions throughout his entire Formula E career.

Di Grassi’s passion for sustainability is not new. Since Formula E's inception, the series has been committed to being net-zero, a principle that Di Grassi has embraced personally. By partnering with Rubicon Carbon, he has calculated and offset the carbon emissions generated by his career in electric racing, aligning with the broader mission of Formula E to lead the way in developing sustainable technologies.

In addition to his racing accolades, including stints in Formula 1 and Le Mans, Di Grassi serves as a Clean Air Advocate for the United Nations Environment Program. He believes that technological innovation, rather than traditional activism, is key to tackling global environmental challenges. Motorsport, he argues, is an ideal platform for testing and refining technologies that can later be applied to everyday life, driving progress towards a more sustainable world.

Di Grassi's involvement in sustainability extends beyond the track. In 2020, he launched the Zero Summit, aiming to foster discussions on how industries can mitigate their environmental impact. The summit, supported by major partners like Bloomberg, reflects Di Grassi’s belief that business and innovation must play a central role in addressing nature degradation.

Through his partnership with Rubicon, Di Grassi is not only offsetting his own carbon footprint but also raising awareness about the potential of carbon credits. He sees sports and entertainment as powerful vehicles for educating the public on the importance of sustainability, encouraging others to contribute to a net-zero future.

As the market for carbon credits grows, Di Grassi envisions a future where offsetting becomes standard practice, driving both companies and individuals to adopt more efficient technologies. His pragmatic approach to sustainability—rooted in the belief that innovation is key to a greener planet—continues to set a precedent in the world of motorsport and beyond.
