Kenya has finalised its carbon framework, enabling project developers to secure Letters of Authorization (LoAs) under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. These LoAs are essential for facilitating carbon projects with corresponding adjustments (CAs), an accounting method to prevent double-counting emissions reductions.

Last month, Kenya’s Ministry of Environment published its Multi-Sectoral Technical Committee (MSTC) members. The MSTC, working under the National Environment Management Authority, will review project proposals through specialised ad hoc committees.
A $4 per tonne CO2 fee has been set for projects seeking corresponding adjustments, adding a premium for investors. Despite this, developers are optimistic about the benefits of Kenya's robust carbon market, which is among Africa's most dynamic.

DGB Group announced that it is preparing to secure a LoA for its Hongera Energy Efficient Cookstoves Project in Kenya. Verified under the Gold Standard methodology—Technologies and Practices to Displace Decentralised Thermal Energy Consumption—the project has already begun issuing carbon credits for 2023–2024. The project is distributing 150,000 energy-efficient cookstoves to rural households, with almost 70,000 cookstoves already in the field, improving energy efficiency and reducing indoor emissions. Carbon unit issuances from this project for 2025 are projected at 145,000 and for 2026 at 220,000.

DGB emphasised that securing a LoA will increase the project’s market appeal, supporting higher carbon unit prices and greater impact.
Kenya’s leadership in carbon project development highlights its potential as a major player in global sustainability initiatives. With the framework in place, developers anticipate LoA issuances to begin soon, marking a significant milestone for carbon markets in Africa.
