Building healthier homes: more cookstoves distributed in Kenya

We're thrilled to share another achievement in our ongoing efforts to bring 150,000 energy-efficient cookstoves to communities across Kenya. In late October in Kinamba, Laikipia West, 1,004 cookstoves were distributed to local families eager to embrace a cleaner, more sustainable way of cooking.

The Hongera Energy-Efficient Cookstoves Project is rooted in the communities around Mt Kenya and the Aberdare regions. This region holds not only rich biodiversity but also a resilient community that relies on natural resources for daily life. Each cookstove we distribute here is more than just a household item; it's a powerful tool for preserving the environment, reducing daily hardships, and improving community health.

Since the project's inception, we've manufactured and distributed an impressive 68,000 stoves, a number that translates directly into healthier families, preserved forests, and a step towards achieving sustainable development goals. As we approach this achievement, our focus remains steadfast on the impact these stoves have on local families, reducing firewood usage and preventing deforestation.

These stoves represent the collective power of community-driven sustainability. They are crafted locally, offering jobs and strengthening economic resilience in the region. The stoves help cut down on smoke exposure and cooking time, addressing severe respiratory issues in households while giving families more time for other important tasks, such as their children’s education. This project saves each household 5.7 hours per week of time spent gathering firewood and about 1,500 Kenya Shilling (KES) per month.

With each cookstove distributed, we're fostering cleaner, healthier, and more resilient communities that exemplify the possibility of local actions creating global impact.

As we continue expanding this project, we remain committed to bringing the benefits of these cookstoves to as many homes as possible. We’re excited to see the difference each stove makes, not just in Laikipia West but across Kenya.
