Reforesting the Dé forest: DGB and AGRO-MAP partner for a sustainable future in Ivory Coast

Dutch Green Business Group (DGB) is a leading developer of large-scale biodiversity projects focusing on generating carbon credits and biodiversity compensation. In this article, we will delve into the partnership between DGB and AGRO-MAP and the potential for a feasibility study to implement a carbon credit project in the Dé forest.

DGB and AGRO-MAP

DGB is an organisation that designs, develops, and manages large-scale biodiversity projects. Accredited by leading verification standards, DGB is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving biodiversity. We work with local communities, private entities, and governments to develop projects that align with our vision of a more sustainable future.

DGB is renowned for its excellence in developing sustainable projects and generating carbon credits and biodiversity compensation. We work closely with partners to ensure project success and have a track record of delivering high-quality results.

AGRO-MAP is an Ivorian organisation that specialises in implementing forest projects. The organisation has a wealth of experience working with local communities and private entities to develop sustainable projects that promote reforestation and biodiversity conservation.

The partnership

In March 2022, DGB expressed its interest in developing a feasibility study for implementing a carbon credit project in the Dé forest, a heavily degraded forest in Ivory Coast. The Dé forest covers an area of 12,900 hectares and is located between the regions of Marahoué and Sassandra. AGRO-MAP, as a local partner, is well-positioned to work with DGB to develop the project.

The Minister of Water and Forestry, Laurent Tchagba, met with representatives from AGRO-MAP and DGB in February 2023 to discuss the partnership and the potential for the project. During the meeting, AGRO-MAP presented DGB, and the Minister welcomed the partnership. The Minister instructed his Technical Advisor to draft the terms of reference and continue the discussions towards the project's feasibility study.

Potential for the project

The Dé forest is an area in urgent need of reforestation, and a carbon credit project could provide a solution. The project would involve reforesting the area, leading to the generation of carbon credits that can be sold to entities seeking to offset their carbon emissions. This would provide a revenue stream for local communities and private entities, incentivising them to participate in reforestation efforts.

The project would also contribute to the preservation of biodiversity in the area. As the forest regenerates, it will provide a habitat for many plant and animal species, helping to conserve biodiversity and promote a healthier ecosystem.

Conclusion

The partnership between DGB and AGRO-MAP has the potential to bring about positive change in the Dé forest. By developing a carbon-credit project, the area can be reforested, providing revenue for local communities and private entities. The project can also contribute to preserving biodiversity, making the area more sustainable for future generations. With the support of the Minister of Water and Forestry, the feasibility study for the project is expected to move forward, and we look forward to seeing the results.
