After selling out quickly last year, the Kenya Beehive Project has moved from ambition to action—and is now thriving. What began as a bold initiative to restore bee populations and support rural communities is now unfolding in full force across Kenya. With strong local interest and clear environmental and economic benefits, the project is gaining momentum on the ground, bringing us closer to our long-term vision of sustainable ecosystem restoration paired with meaningful livelihood support.

The latest developments from the field reflect the energy and dedication driving the Kenya Beehive Project forward. Beehive distributions are now underway, with the team in Kenya aiming to deliver between 100 and 120 hives each month until August. This consistent rollout highlights the project’s momentum and the growing engagement from local farmers.

Just last week, one farmer in Nyahururu, Laikipia County, received 50 hives—a substantial delivery that illustrates the scale of the initiative. The hives are delivered empty and strategically placed in shaded areas, such as forest edges or well-travelled bee flight paths, to attract swarming colonies. To increase the chances of occupation, the hive interiors are coated with beeswax and propolis. These efforts are proving successful: The same farmer previously received hives that were fully colonised within weeks using this method. The 50 new hives are expected to be fully occupied within two to three months.

As the project grows, so does the support infrastructure. An important recent development has been the training of a new local team tasked with hive monitoring—a crucial step to ensure hive health and productivity are maintained over time..
To align with the bee colonisation timeline, DGB Group’s local partner, the Akili Group, has also delivered targeted training sessions to farmers on safe and responsible honey harvesting. Since honey is typically ready for harvest about six months after a colony settles, this knowledge arrives at the perfect moment for those preparing their first full harvest.

Together, these developments signal a strong foundation for long-term success—combining consistent distribution, technical training, and hands-on local support.

Launched in 2023, the Kenya Beehive Project is a nature-based solution that directly benefits both biodiversity and rural livelihoods. The aim of the project is to increase the bee population in Kenya, which is essential to biodiversity. One hive alone pollinates fruit trees, flowers, and crops within a 5-kilometre radius.
The project equips farmers with hives, tools, and training to engage in sustainable beekeeping—an activity that not only supports pollination and ecosystem health but also provides a steady source of additional income.

In Kenya, many farmers survive on as little as €92 per month. Through this project, each hive has the potential to generate around €28 annually, increasing a farmer’s income by roughly 2.5%. While that might seem modest, it can be life-changing—helping families cover school fees, medical costs, or invest in their farms. With each hive, we’re planting the seeds of resilience—both environmental and economic.
