Verra releases updated CORSIA label guidance

Verra has introduced its CORSIA Label Guidance, aimed at simplifying the process for aviation carbon credit compliance. This move follows a significant milestone in December 2024 when the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) extended the eligibility of Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program under CORSIA from the Pilot Phase to the First Phase (2024–2026).

CORSIA, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, is designed to cap international aviation emissions at 2020 levels. Aircraft operators are required to offset emissions exceeding these limits, using approved carbon credits that meet strict criteria, including sustainable development reporting and assurance against double-claiming.

Verra’s guidance outlines how project developers can request CORSIA labels for eligible Verified Carbon Units (VCUs). These labels ensure compliance and transparency for credits used under the scheme. Key requirements include proof of host country authorisation, clear eligibility labels, and assurance of no double-claiming.

The new system also streamlines administrative processes. VCUs labelled during the Pilot Phase are automatically updated to meet new criteria, avoiding additional work for project proponents. Labels like the ‘CORSIA Eligible Label’ and ‘Article 6 Authorized Label’ play a critical role in ensuring that emissions reductions are credited correctly.

Transparency remains a cornerstone of Verra’s approach. Mitigation outcomes from 2021 onward are carefully managed to prevent double-counting by both countries and airlines. If host countries withdraw approval, Verra enforces compensation measures to maintain compliance.

This update solidifies Verra’s commitment to supporting sustainable aviation through integrity in carbon markets, paving the way for reduced emissions and a more transparent system as international aviation moves toward its environmental goals.
