UN releases key documents for Paris Agreement’s Article 6.4 framework

The United Nations climate agency has published over 30 documents related to the operationalisation of Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. These documents, now available on the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) website, outline critical requirements for participation in the project-based carbon mechanism.

The publications include various forms and guidelines addressing project design, registration, credit issuance, monitoring, and validation processes. Additionally, forms for crediting period renewal, post-registration changes, and related notifications have been made accessible to streamline implementation.

This development follows agreements reached during the COP29 environmental negotiations in Baku last year, where international consensus was achieved to advance carbon market mechanisms under the Paris Agreement.

Article 6.4 serves as a regulatory framework for carbon projects implemented across countries, enabling the transfer of mitigation outcomes to meet Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These NDCs represent national commitments to reduce emissions and enhance climate resilience. Often regarded as the successor to the Kyoto Protocol’s Clean Development Mechanism, Article 6.4 aims to bolster international cooperation in achieving emission reductions.

The uploaded resources mark a significant step toward enabling efficient and transparent international carbon markets, offering stakeholders essential tools to participate in this next phase of global environmental action.
