Rwanda has secured a $39.1 million grant aimed at restoring the ecologically significant Congo-Nile Divide. The initiative, set to commence this month, targets deforestation and enhances climate resilience across the Western, Northern, and Southern provinces.

The Congo-Nile Divide, an area of immense ecological and economic value, is facing threats from population pressure, intensive farming, and deforestation. This has led to soil degradation and increased landslides, endangering both the environment and local communities.

Funded by the Green Climate Fund, a UN-backed facility, the four-year project will cover 10 districts, including Musanze, Rubavu, and Nyamasheke. According to Concorde Nsengumuremyi, Director General of the Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA), the project aims to protect biodiversity and ensure sustainable practices in the region.
The initiative is expected to deliver economic and social benefits by boosting eco-tourism and supporting sustainable agriculture. The restoration of natural habitats and biodiversity is anticipated to enhance the region's appeal as a major tourist destination, creating revenue opportunities for local communities.

Additionally, the project will focus on expanding and preserving forests through reforestation and agroforestry techniques, promoting alternative energy sources to reduce pressure on forests. This effort aims to halve deforestation rates and curb biodiversity loss, with over 1.2 million people set to benefit, including job creation in forest-dependent communities.
By safeguarding the Congo-Nile Divide, the project will play a crucial role in conserving the Albertine Rift, one of Africa's most biodiverse regions.
