Nigeria eyes carbon revenue with nationwide cookstove rollout

Nigeria has unveiled an ambitious plan to distribute 80 million clean cookstoves nationwide, beginning with 6 million units in the Lagos State. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to generate carbon credits by reducing emissions from traditional cooking methods, offering a significant opportunity for the country to participate in global carbon markets.

The announcement was made during the 80M Clean Cookstoves Project Implementation Retreat, a three-day event in Ikeja, Lagos. Government officials emphasised that the programme aims to improve air quality, reduce deforestation linked to firewood consumption, and create a structured pathway for issuing carbon credits.

‘The initiative focuses on providing 80 million highly efficient clean cookstoves to Nigerian households, with 6 million units allocated for Lagos State,’ the state government stated in an official post.

As part of the plan, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu revealed that efforts are underway to establish a local manufacturing facility for the stoves. The move could support job creation while ensuring a steady supply of clean cooking solutions for households across the state.

Beyond immediate health and environmental benefits, Nigeria is positioning itself to leverage carbon markets. Titilayo Oshodi, special adviser on climate change and circular economy for Lagos State, confirmed the government's intent to develop a comprehensive carbon credit portfolio. ‘Upon the full implementation, we will further develop a comprehensive carbon credit portfolio to identify projects in Lagos State [with the potential to trade credits]’, she said.

Nigeria has been ramping up its focus on emissions reduction, particularly in its energy sector. In January, the country's oil regulator mandated that companies seeking new exploration licenses must integrate carbon-reduction projects into their operations. Meanwhile, the federal government has set its sights on unlocking as much as $2.5 billion through carbon markets, as revealed by an official during a UN event last year.

With the cookstove initiative gaining momentum, Nigeria is taking a significant step toward both sustainability and economic opportunity, signalling a commitment to integrating carbon finance into its development strategy.
