A groundbreaking conservation project in Mexico is on track to generate the first biodiversity credits under the BioCarbon standard. This initiative, led by Rancho La Onza and CarbonPlus, focuses on the restoration and protection of 200 hectares within the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in Guanajuato.

The project site, rich in diverse ecosystems such as submontane shrubland and tropical deciduous forests, is notable for being the only confirmed habitat of the endangered jaguarundi in the state. The project has already been listed on the Global Carbon Trace registry platform, signalling its progress towards validation.

BioCarbon, the certifying body, is working closely with the developers to finalise technical details. ‘We aim to issue the first credits before COP16’, stated Clara Morales, BioCarbon’s biodiversity officer. The standard's methodology measures biodiversity gains using 15 indicators, which are then used to calculate the credits issued annually.
The conservation efforts include isolating forest fragments, reintroducing native species, and removing invasive species. Additional activities, such as installing water stations for wildlife and executing reforestation projects, have been carried out to restore the area.

Educational programmes and research initiatives have also been launched to increase community awareness and understanding of the region’s biodiversity. This project is part of a broader movement in Mexico to explore biodiversity credits as a tool for scaling conservation efforts.
