German airline, Lufthansa Group, has announced the launch of its new sustainable travel product, Green Fares, becoming the first airline group to offer a product that includes offsetting carbon emissions.
Green Fares will enable passengers to fly more sustainably with just one click, using a blend of 20% sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and 80% high-quality climate protection projects. The new fares will also offer additional status miles and a free rebooking option. Corporate customers can also receive a carbon mitigation certificate for the carbon reduction achieved with the SAF.
The product, which has been in the testing phase since last year, will be offered by Lufthansa Airlines and Lufthansa Group brands: Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Edelweiss, Eurowings Discover, and Air Dolomiti on more than 730,000 flights per year within Europe and to Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. The fares can be booked on the airlines' websites as well as the New Distribution Capability (NDC) platform in economy class and business class.

‘We already offer the most comprehensive portfolio for more sustainable travel and are now expanding this further with Green Fares,’ said Christina Foerster of the Lufthansa Group's Executive Board responsible for Brand and Sustainability.
The Lufthansa Group aims to achieve a neutral carbon balance by 2050, with a target to reduce 50% of its net carbon emissions by 2030 compared to 2019. The group was the first airline group in Europe to have a science-based carbon reduction target in line with the goals of the 2015 UN Paris Climate Agreement. The group is focusing on accelerated fleet modernisation and SAF use.
