Italian nature tech firm unveils biodiversity credit initiative

An Italian nature tech company, 3Bee, is set to introduce a standardised biodiversity framework by the end of this year, aiming to launch its first certified biodiversity credits in 2025 for the European voluntary market. Simone Mazzola, COO of 3Bee, highlighted the company’s ongoing pilot projects in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, and the UK, with plans to expand these initiatives shortly.

The framework, based on 3Bee’s Element-E protocol, uses bioacoustics and remote sensing technologies to monitor and quantify site-level biodiversity improvements. Certified by Bureau Veritas and supported by the EU, the guidelines are designed to assist companies in tracking and enhancing biodiversity at their sites.

In collaboration with the Italian standards body UNI, and with contributions from the University of Naples, the University of Turin, Bureau Veritas, research institute CREA, and Climate Standard, 3Bee is developing the Guidelines for Biodiversity and Biodiversity Credits Enhancement. This initiative aims to provide a comprehensive method for European companies to monitor biodiversity progress.

The voluntary biodiversity market is still in its infancy, but there is growing investor demand for standardised, rigorous frameworks. 3Bee’s new framework, expected to be finalised by September, includes four main steps: assessment, regeneration, communication, and monitoring/reporting. This approach ensures detailed habitat analysis, targeted regeneration actions, transparent communication, and adherence to international reporting standards.

Mazzola mentioned that the company’s biodiversity credits would be verified by third parties, enhancing their credibility. These credits, anticipated to be ready next year, will support companies in compensating for their environmental impacts through restoration projects across Europe.

Biodiversity compensation remains a contentious topic. Experts stress that biodiversity credits should enhance ecosystems without harming other locations. 3Bee’s credits are designed to reflect one hectare restored for one year, with prices ranging from €2,000 to €10,000 per unit based on the project location. Payments will be outcome-based, incentivising effective restoration.

3Bee is also collaborating with standards organisations like Verra, Cercarbono, and the Gold Standard to develop a European methodology based on the Mean Species Abundance (MSA) index, ensuring compliance with various sustainability reporting standards and frameworks.
