Farmers reap double benefits with innovative carbon credits

In a move to enhance sustainable farming and carbon credit earnings, two certification companies, FoodChain ID and ReSeed, have launched a groundbreaking methodology for soil carbon projects. This new system, known as the ReSeed Soil Carbon Methodology, aims to provide farmers with dual rewards.

Farmers will benefit financially by maintaining existing soil organic carbon (SOC) through sustainable practices and by removing and storing additional carbon dioxide emissions in the soil. This innovative approach marks a significant step in incentivising sustainable agriculture.

Ruud Overbeek, an executive at Iowa-based FoodChain ID, highlighted the successful verification of farm-level conservation efforts to combat the Amazon’s deforestation as a testament to its partnership with ReSeed. He emphasised that sustainable farming practices can now be both measured and rewarded, offering tangible financial benefits to farmers.

The methodology will be benchmarked against established carbon methodologies like Verra’s VM0042, which focuses on greenhouse gas emission reductions and SOC removals through improved agricultural practices. These practices include reduced tillage, better fertiliser application, and enhanced biomass and water management.

Verra’s VM0042 also promotes lower-carbon techniques in cover crop planting and grazing practices. SOC plays a crucial role in soil quality, fertility, and profitability for farmers, as well as in the soil's ability to extract and store atmospheric carbon dioxide.

FoodChain ID and ReSeed began their collaboration in November last year, aiming to improve transparency in the measurement and verification of regenerative agricultural practices for agribusinesses and food supply chains. This new methodology represents a significant advancement in supporting sustainable farming and enhancing the financial viability of farmers.
