An ambitious carbon project in Ethiopia has been added to Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard registry. Developed by a Netherlands-based group, the initiative aims to restore 12,000 hectares of native forest in the country’s mountainous regions, marking a significant addition to Ethiopia’s carbon credit portfolio.

The project focuses on afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR), and will use Verra's updated ARR methodology. According to Samuel Rosmarin, Chief Investment and Corporate Development Officer of African Bamboo, this listing is a key step in attracting environmental finance to Ethiopia, a country with high potential for nature-based solutions.

The project is expected to sequester 7.26 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over 30 years, starting with 20 hectares and expanding to 12,120 hectares. The goal is not only carbon reduction but also improving soil fertility and creating jobs through agroforestry and sustainable bamboo cultivation.
Bamboo plays a crucial role in Ethiopia’s economy, as the country holds the largest natural bamboo forest in Africa. However, unsustainable harvesting has contributed to deforestation, a challenge the project hopes to address.
