Colombia announced the creation of a new agency focused on climate action, which will determine the exact values of carbon absorbed by ecosystems and manage responsible carbon credits. The agency will also evaluate environmental conditions from wetlands to the Amazon using the scientific knowledge of the institutes that make up the National Environmental System.
At the CEO meeting of the Climate Finance Leadership Initiative, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development announced new responsibilities. The agency will register public and private projects, and provide real-time information on carbon absorbed by hectares of land.

Minister Muhamad emphasised that the agency will generate a public certification with international audits, ensuring that carbon credits are serious and responsible. Additionally, the Ministry of Environment is working with Forest Development Centers, opening production plants, such as Sacha Inchi in San José del Guaviare. These initiatives provide small producers with the necessary tools to move towards a competitive bioeconomy while protecting forests and saving the jungle.
This move by Colombia highlights its commitment to protecting biodiversity and mitigating rising emissions. The agency's efforts will contribute to conserving the country's strategic ecosystems and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, creating more opportunities for responsible carbon credits in the region.
