Dutch banking institution ABN AMRO Clearing forged a transformative partnership with Land Life Company, embarking on a visionary five-year reforestation initiative, transcending geographical boundaries.

The large-scale tree-planting initiative, commencing in the forthcoming summer, is expected to exceed conventional corporate responsibility paradigms. ABN AMRO is committed to combining employee engagement with the noble cause of reforestation. In this project, bank employees will actively participate in tree-planting events across various nations where the bank has a substantial presence, including the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States.
Pauline Engelberts, the Global Chief Operations Officer at ABN AMRO, explains, ’Planting trees in areas where it is needed the most supports our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals on climate action. It is also important for us that we connect the tree planting we do together as a team in our own neighbourhoods to what is required for climate action on a global scale.’
This pioneering endeavour is especially timely in light of escalating environmental crises, which have precipitated mounting pressure on financial institutions to enact meaningful change.

Under the support of the five-year programme, ABN AMRO aspires to plant the seeds of 50,000 trees annually on average, with the ultimate objective of offsetting approximately 10,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. Trees, with their impressive carbon absorption power, serve as custodians of carbon sinks, playing a crucial role in nature restoration efforts. Furthermore, meticulous tracking and monitoring of the planted trees will enable the bank to assess the progress of carbon sequestration over time.
Rebekah Braswell, Chief Commercial Officer of Land Life Company, applauds ABN AMRO's forward-thinking approach, stating, ‘ABN AMRO Clearing has always looked beyond carbon in their climate action programme. They connect rebuilding forests and ecosystems with employee engagement. This programme shows their commitment to climate action in the long run. We are very proud to support this forward-looking approach.’
This reforestation initiative is an evolutionary step, building upon the existing two-year climate action partnership between ABN AMRO and Land Life Company. As part of this ongoing collaboration, over 17,000 trees are being planted in Castilla y León, Spain, and Australia. The choice of these locations is symbolic of the bank's strategic focus on addressing desertification in Spain and rehabilitating land degraded by overgrazing and wildfires in Australia.
